Sladjana Milosevic for Philip Pride… He will kick ass.

If you’re one of us good kind folks who care for the future of Lubbock, Tx even though we won’t be here after too long, then cast your stones by next Wednesday night midnight for Mr. Philip Pride. He’s by far the best candidate for SGA President this year and probably for a long time here at Tech. The opposing candidate is worth nothing in my opinion. I don’t know the person but it doesn’t matter cause the person apparently is going to get 1500 automatic votes cause of the sorority and what not they’re in…and I think that’s perfectly fine, except we the people of America need to know what it is to be a good role model and a good president of the student government. We don’t need some rich kids money to get a good president of the students in office. We got guts and balls that can take down anyone, anytime, anyplace. Philip has worked hard ever since he’s stepped his sexy sandles on Tech’s campus.

Just check out his facebook group page and read for yourself. I’m just helpin out a brother here. Laytas.

Mechanical Bride & Jamaican Folk Singers

19 02 2008

shiz2-copy.jpg

Mechanical Bride is this cool chick out of Brighton, Uk and the reason I played her was cause of her sweet sweet rendition of Rihanna’s Umbrella. It’s so different than Rihanna’s, it becomes almost haunting of a love song with its melancholic yet optimistic dreamy sounds. I didn’t even know the words were so nice when listening it in Rihanna’s version. Mechanical Bride’s version brings the words of “stand under my umbrella” alive and I’m glad she did this. I had callers asking who it was so here it is.

Another tune enjoyed was “Mi Cahfi” by the The Jamaican Folk Singers. This group started out back in ‘67 and they recorded 3 lp’s and now are a classic in the Jamaican musical history. It’s a commoners story of one’s relationship with the phenomenon that is coffee. They have mostly female vocalist and they recorded the simple sweetness of people’s harmonious chorus that told the Jamaican folk stories, hence their groups name.

Tsehaytu’s Gift

6 02 2008

Tsehaytu Beraki

Tsehaytu is an absolutely legendary singer from Eritrea. Born in 1939 in Quatit, a small village, she soon picked up the krar (5-string harp) and after moving to the capital Asmara she became a famous singer in bars, to attract men to the local traditional beer houses. In the 1970-ies she was discovered by producer Tewelde Redda, who took her to Addis Abeba, to record for Philips some 7² singles. She also appeared on television all over Ethiopia and Eritrea. She was a very big star. But the political situation got more and more intense. Eritrea was fighting for independence, and Tsehaytu got involved in the struggle. Her songs moved from love songs to more polical statements and comments. She was actually playing and singing at the front, for eight years. Heavy days. One time her concert was bombed, seven people died and Tsehaytu was badly injured. After her faction, the ELF, was pushed into the Sudan by the rivalling EPLF, she didn¹t give up and went back to the villages, to sing and support the women and children. Her courage and inspiration still mean a lot to all Eritreans. When the situation became too bad, she too had to flee into Sudan and in 1988 she ended up in Rotterdam, Holland, where she still is.

I’ve played Tsehaytu Beraki on the show quite a few times now and if one can tell, she’s one of my favorite musicians and she happens to be from my mamma’s country of Eritrea. I used to hear Tsehaytu on the cassette player or the radio when I was a little kid in Ethiopia. I think I must’ve been 5 or 6. I remember especially hearing her song Aminey and Medjemerya Fikrey. Those were some great tunes to listen to when you’re a kid and unfortunately I stopped speaking Tigrigna when I was a kid cause everybody in the family left the house when the right time came and so now I have a hard time sometimes understanding everything she says. It’s all good though, I’ll get that lingo back soon.

Monday Night mix numero 18

6 02 2008

ADDIS

Rhythm Rue just turned 18 last night, if we may say so. It’s pretty amazing wouldn’t you say? An international music show of this caliber wouldn’t usually exist in Lubbock, Texas if it wasn’t for the great KTXT. Everyone should by the way tune in to the station online or however whenever you feel like it. It’s pretty damn good of a station. Now we got the hip-hop show back on air after a semester or so of a hiatus so now it’s on Saturday nights 10 to midnight, if I’m correct. I’ll probly be gettin my hand on that show once in a while.

If you heard any of the music from last night, it was great. I found some Mauritius music of all music. It sounds so great. They live on a tiny island that used to be inhabited by Indians from India, Africans from Madagascar & etc…then came the Portuguese, Dutch, French then English…and it’s officially part of the African Union. They also have this rich mixture of musical influence from all of these occupations and peoples that have gone through this tiny little island off the coast of Madagascar. Listen for yourself.

Besides that, we had some Astor Piazzolla from Argentina, Tsehaytu Beraki from Eritrea, Faytinga, Gaggi from Assyria, Luis Gallardo, The Apples from Tel Aviv with their dope funk music and much much more. A great mix of tunes brought to you by moi and noudi. Download and enjoy and share, if you feel like it.

Roots Manuva + Slow Train

1 02 2008

roots_manuva-alternately_deep.jpg

Roots Manuva is an amazing British rapper whom you might find really interesting and crazy at the same time. I love his lyrics. Some of the best written words now-a-days in rap music, let alone any other genre of music. I’m posting up a non lyrical tune of his though, I know that’s lame but it’s the one I played on air so I’ll post of Roots more later on.

Slow Train is another group from London and I totally meant to play them on air Monday night but forgot to so here they are. They make some nice soulful tunes that relax the ears and get me in a nice mood after listening to the sad yet inspiring “In the black of night”.

Check it out, let me know what you think kids.
