Last Night’s Experiment

15 10 2008

If you tuned in last night, great. If not, not so good perhaps but I’m sure there was something much more important. That said, I had lots and lots of fun playing around with the audio clips I prepared and pretty much mixed in on the spot improv style. So the show started with a clip of an interview of Noam Chomsky by Ali G, yes…Ali G. Somewhere in the middle an 80’s Japanese Nintendo commercial was played, a 60’s LSD propaganda clip was sampled, some clips from Fellini’s 8 1/2 were sampled where Marcello is in bed with his mistress and she puts her make up on then asking him if he likes it, where he responds with “make it more sluttier” in Italian. Then a few songs from my vinyls and Russian 60’s pop music…culminating the evening with a great speech from “The Great Dictator” by Charlie Chaplin. If you’ve never seen it, watch the youtube clip down there…

So it was an experiment that went well in my opinion, a bit improvised so I can’t tell how the listeners took it but I had great fun doing it. It’s a lot different that the usual Rhythm Rue format for the show but I was there by myself cause Noudi was out for the evening and so I brought a lil taste of what yours truly does on his extra time. Hope you had a good time. Unfortunately, I couldn’t record it all because it was straight up from youtube and vinyls. But for next time, I’ll get my programs in the studio.

But I wont’ leave you without at least one or two tracks so here are some good tunes and vids.

Som Imaginário e outros, O lado Brasileiro da psicodélico

7 10 2008

The peeps at Mutant Sounds will tell you about how a progressive rock band formed in the early ’70s in Rio de Janeiro by a core of musicians from the Minas Gerais state, the Som Imaginário developed an influential career and also backed artists like Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Fafá de Belém, Sueli Costa, Carlinhos Vergueiro, and Jards Macalé in live performances and recordings. The group was formed by Wagner Tiso (keyboards), Zé Rodrix (organ/percussion/voice/flutes), Robertinho Silva (drums), Tavito (12-string guitar), Luís Alves (bass), and Laudir de Oliveira (percussion), around which Toninho Horta (guitars) and Nivaldo Ornelas (saxes) eventually performed.

Som Imaginario was something I stumbled upon and very glad to have happened cause they have a classic sound and much appreciated musical skills. Much of their albums can be found on amazon or random blogs or just specialty orders either on ebay or specific vendors like dustygroove.

Others I’m excited to bring is Tribo, Modulo 1000 and Equipe Mercado. The Tribe as it would be translated into english was formed by Nelson Angelo, Joyce, Novelli, Toninho Horta and Naná Vasconcelos (later replaced by Nene’s battery) in the early 70’s. Their single Kyrie is a must have for you music lovers and it’s uploaded.

Equipe Mercado is a group formed by Diana (voice), Leugruber (guitar), Richard Ginsburg (guitar), Stul (guitar, bass, piano and voice), Carlos Graça (drums) and Ronaldo Periassu (percussion) in 1970 in Rio with the greatest influence the psychedelic rock of the 60s. They were launched in 1971 with a compact simple songs “The fields of rice” and “Side b rock”, shutting down its activities in the following year.

Solo Unrest

7 10 2008

I went to a few new blogs over the    weekend and found some amazing   music. That’s all I can say to sum up  last night’s mix. I found an awesome  collection of a 1971 Brazillian  psychedelic music that I was very much  excited to play and I did and the  response was wonderful. I’ll add more  sinlge files of the Brazillian for you to  personally hear and enjoy.

Besides that, the session was really good. Unfortunately Noudi was out of town so if you’re a fan of Noudi, lo siento, she’ll be back next week. But I was there and it was just you and me last night, it was healthy to have that one on one experience once in a while, right? right.

I could go off on all of the music I played last night but I’d prefer you ask because like I said, I go off on why this music is great and why you should have it but I’m sure you’re conscious enough to know why.

Enjoy the tunes, laters.
